Media Representation

Reflecting on my previous experiment, I have decided to use a more refined screenprint. I liked the lack of details originally as it led me to think about media representation, however, I think my message is stronger with a clearer print.

I have lost all of the pen markings in this piece to enable me to see if there is a stronger message without the markings distracting you. Looking at this piece, I do think I need to add more to it in order to make it more visually impressive.

As well as losing the pen markings I have decided to use magazines opposed to newspaper. There are a couple of reason behind this. Firstly, I think this is more inspired by David Carson and his work with the magazine: Ray Gun. Originally, I think the newspaper could represent the fast, disposable and reactive reporting that comes from mainstream media. However, for this piece I have decided to switch to magazines as I believe they portray a more idealised and polished representation in comparison to a newspaper. A magazine focuses more on the visual aesthetic, looking at topics such as celebrity culture and beauty standards, therefore I think the use of magazines is a much better fit for my work.

I have chosen to use more hard hitting quotes instead of using words to describe the person in the image. The phrase 'who cotrols the lens' Whose deciding what is the ideal life? The quote 'they choose what you see' is pointing out the fact we hide what we want to hide, and only show the good parts of our lives. Finally, the last quite is 'I don't see me'. This perfectly represents the idea of being what you think you should be, oposed to who you really are.

The final thing I have decided to add to this piece is the torn section of the original photograph I had taken. I have purposefully not stuck the image down perfectly, as the loose edges portrays the cracks into reality slowly peeling away.

Looking at this piece, I am happy with the directing I am going. I do, however, think I need to add more to it by adding more marks and more techniques.
