Artist Research: Ray Gun

My tutor, Julian, recommended the Graphic Designer David Carson and his work with Ray Gun. This was to gain inspiration regardig text, which will add more layers to my work.

He is known for graphic typography and havig a grunge design style. Carson had no previous design training in his earlier life, and was introduced to Graphic Design by attending a workshop in Switzerland held by Hans-Rudolf Lutz. His first magazines were heavily influnced by skating as that was something he was passionate about and took part in doing in his spare time.

Ray Gun is the magazine company he published for, where he set an article in 'Dingbat Font' because he thought the content on the magazine was boring and wanted to make it more visually interesting.

Carson used fragmented layouts, overlappping text, and distressed visuals because he prioritised emotional impact over readablility.
