Water Spout

After talking with my tutor, I have decided to start taking a range of images inspired by artists such as Hannah Starkey and Clare Strand. When we spoke about potential places to take some photos, I immediately thought of the water spout in Croxton Kerrial. We decided it might be a good opportunity to go to this water spout and take a picture, standing underneath it with an umbrella.

I went to the spout and began taking the photos. To begin I had someone stand on the other side of the road and take the picture, as I thought you would be able to see the whole thing and have some of the road/ cars in the photographs. It quickly became apparent that this wasn't going to work as the lighting was way off what I wanted it to be. This is when I decided to take the photos on the same side of the road instead. I found these images were more successful, however, ideally I would have used a bigger umbrella that would stop any water going on me (the water flow was a lot stronger than I had anticipated). Another thing I would have changed is the way I have stood in the photo. I was taken back by the strong flow and the fact I was getting covered in water, therefore my stance was very weak and not as casual and nonchalant as I was hoping it would be.

I have gone on to edit the images in multiple ways. Firstly, I have enhanced the colours as I thought the original images were quite dull. I then decided to turn the background black and white, whilst keeping myself in colour. The reason I decided to do this was because the water spout has been standing since at least 1927 and has since been refurbished in 2003. I like the fact this has history behind it and I thought it would be interesting to showcase that by using black and white and contrasting that with modern day society i.e myself being in colour.

Overall, I like the idea of this photo and it is something I would revisit, however, I need to plan it better and be more prepared.
