Ceramics

Today I have been inducted into the plastic and ceramics studios. I was able to learn about the space as well as meet the technician. We made press moulds, and to begin I collected leaves and foliage from a garden nearby. I then pressed them into the clay. It quickly became apparent that the leaves with deeper lines would work better. The next exercise was to press the clay against objects outside of the space. For this, we visited a church and were able to get a variety of text and textures. When it came to creating the boarders for the moulds, my tutor suggested using some of the clay containing prints. This created a more interesting design with markings on all areas of the clay.

There are some health and safety regulations we have to follow when working in a ceramics studio.
- keep dust to a minimum. Clay contains some free crystalline silica which can scar your lung tissue, son it is important to clean up the dust as you are working to avoid breathing it in.
- don't eat, drink or smoke in the workspace.
