Artist Research: Hannah Starkey

Hannah Starkey is a contemporary photography and is bets known for her composed, staged images of women in urban environments. 

Her work captures women in what seems to be an everyday moment that evokes isolation or quiet contemplation. The women that Starkey uses in her work are actresses who she asks to pose in certain ways to create candid and slightly surreal images. Starkey's images explore themes of femininity, identity and the representation of women in a contemporary society. 

After speaking with Julian, he gave me a selection of artists to look at in order to develop my practice further. The reason he selected Hannah Starkey for me to look at is because of her staged photography. At this point in my project I am looking at staging some images. I think she has a strong conceptual and cinematic quality which makes her an interesting person to research and take inspiration from. I find she is very particular with her composition, and she often uses areas such as doorways, mirrors or window reflections. I haven't yet decided what exactly it is I am wanting to photography, however, there is a water spout I drive past an have been intrigued by so this might be a good place for me to stage a photograph.
